September Backyard and Garden Care Tips

I love my backyard and garden but it does require maintenance. The Fall is all about, those nasty chores. I have outlined what I usually do in September. The upcoming months I will provide similar information. So come back often!!

Birdhouse Care:
As the weather changes in the late fall and into the winter, birds can use bird houses to escape from the chilling rain, wind, snow or ice. Face your bird house away from the prevailing winds if possible.
  • Clean your birdhouse at least once a year. Specific information on cleaning methods...
  • Stain, repair or replace birdhouses if needed. Birds tend to be attracted to birdhouses that have a more weathered looks so if you are tempted to paint-DON’T!!
  • Although spring is the time most people put up new decorative birdhouses. Fall is actually a better time because it gives the birdhouse several months to get weathered.

Water Fountain Maintenance:
Leaves & other debris should be removed from your garden water fountains and pond fountains daily. With all the dead leaves and other plant matter blowing around, you could end up with a lot of rotting plant material in your fountain basin which could damage your pump and stain the surface of your fountain

Feeding the Birds:
Many people do not start feeding birds until the winter season but that is a big mistake. Fall is the season to begin, even though natural foods are plentiful and the birds may not spend much time at your feeder yet. The birds that do visit feeders in the fall are scouting. They need to be ready when cold weather hits.

Lawn and Garden Chores:
Before doing anything, think back over your past garden season. Take notes (I use a garden journal) of what worked, what didn’t, what perennials need to be moved or divided and what you want to try next year. Now it is time to dig into the real work in the checklist below:

  • Prepare beds for new divisions by weeding, removing faded annuals, and fertilizing
  • Plant mums, kale, flowering cabbage or pansies.
  • Dig up daylilies & perennials for division. Separate clumps with a pair of garden forks.
  • Plant shrub roses.
  • Plant spring flowering bulbs and lilies
  • Core-aerate your lawn.
  • Prune diseased, damaged or broken stems and branches.
  • Slugs become active in cooler weather. Control with slug bait or stale beer in shallow pans.
Clear out the vegetable garden and to get it ready for a winter rest.

The Don’ts
DON’T mulch until after first freeze
DON’T cut back perennials until leaves have turned brown or yellow. Green foliage is still manufacturing food for next year's growth.
DON’T fertilize roses, if fertilized new growthwill not harden off before winter.
DON’T use fungicides on mildew it is not needed this late in the season
